Whoopee, Wow

Get 1/4 cup of flavored balsamic vinegar. We like the fruity varieties like pineapple & cherry, but we'll leave that to your own taste & sense of adventure. Mix in 1/4 tsp of stevia (a super sweetener which is entirely natural & low calorie) to 2 quarts of water. Blend well & chill.

It is wonderful on a hot day.

Curry Quinoa

Here's a recipe for a pretty cool curry quinoa, that I've tried in Vancouver. We were staying up in North Vancouver, where all restaurants are closed at night, and not so many vegan places were available. So we've been frequenting a local Sobeys deli section. Luckily we found this vegan dish, but I have to say when made at home it's much more delicious! :)

  • 1/2 cup cooked quinoa
  • 1/2 medium white onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1/3 cup virgin olive oil
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp yellow curry powder
  • cayenne pepper to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 2 large basil leaves chopped
  • 3 tbsp chopped dill
  • 2 white mushrooms, cut
  • 1 cup frozen peas

Into a large skillet pour olive oil, add chopped onion and garlic, curry and cumin, mix well. Fry for about 10min on low setting. After the onion turns golden, add cut mushrooms, dill, basil, salt, cayenne and black pepper. Add the peas, mix well, and cook for another 3-5 min. After that mix in the cooked quinoa. It's ready! Garnish with basil leaves and some tomatoes :)

I have 2kg of onions in a fruit and veg pack that I bought last week. I'm sneaking them into most of the sauces, etc I cook (my kids don't eat them) and the side dishes (mash, polenta, risotto, pasta), but when I buy another pack on Monday, I'm still going to have heaps left.
I don't do preserving, so cooking up a pile of caramelised onions won't work - I'd just end up throwing them out.
I was thinking a French onion style soup, and am going to throw some in to pumpkin soup, but still will have a pile left.

Any ideas?

Veggie Version of Iowa Eatery's Special

Last week I saw a report on "the Rachel Maddow Show" in which Barack Obama made one of his stops during his presidential campaign in '08 at a Iowa restaurant. Their special is a dish called Magic Mountian/Volcano which is made with Texas toast at the bottom some goround beef, french fries, cheese sauce, and "volcano" is topped with chili. http://qctimes.com/news/local/article_c64f892a-a455-11e0-80df-001cc4c03286.html

I think you can make a veggie version by using veggie burger or Morning Star crumbles french bakes (cut up a potato into quarters, coat it in olive oil and bake them) cheese sauce, and top with veggie chili.

Thai noodle salad?

Hey guys!  Does anyone have any good recipes for a Thai noodle salad?

I went to a vineyard in Napa Valley that had a gourmet deli.  I was too much, eh... well... the wine tastings before I got there did such a job on my head that I was swaying too much to remember the name of it, lol! 8D  But we took home this great Thai noodle salad.  It has fried noodles, toasted sesame, baby corn, red peppers, chives, and a couple of other vegetables in it I can't identify.  Tossed in an oil.

Help me out, please?

Veggie Burgers

What is your favourite veggie burger recipe?  Extra points for being corn free.

I had a chickpea/lentil one last night at a restaurant.  It was fantastic and didn't seem like it would be hard to make.  It was topped by guacamole and salsa.  Sooo awesome.  It also gave me that "meaty" satisfaction without hitting my stomach like a rock or making me lethargic afterwards.  Veggie food just makes me feel so much better.

turnip glut

We had a go at growing turnips on the allotment this year. Now we have harvested a load, does anyone have any fantastic turnip recipes I should know about? I don't think I've ever eaten turnip before.
